Is Josh Allen’s Carelessness Tanking the Bills? A Closer Look at the Quarterback’s Turnover Woes

2023-09-15 23:00:00

Josh Allen has been so clumsy and careless in recent months that if he decided to pursue acting, erratic filmmaking would be his new genre.

Are the Bills imploding because of their quarterback’s repeated gifts to opposing defenses? No, not for the moment, but it is high time that their leader pulls himself together and becomes worthy of his position again.

To all those who say that one game does not make a season, know that it is absolutely true. In his sixth year, Allen has proven so much that he can be a gem of a quarterback that it would be churlish not to give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s even a safe bet that in a few weeks, the doubts of the moment will have evaporated.

However, his terrible game with four turnovers last Monday against the Jets is nothing more than a simple anomaly. Seven times since last season, the Bills center has had games with at least two turnovers. He also led the league in this unenviable category in 2022 with 19 turnovers.

Double-edged knife

Since joining the NFL in 2018, Allen has been the victim of a league-high 84 turnovers. That he took crazy risks with the ball his rookie year is one thing. That he continues to do this so often after five full seasons is troubling.

The problem is, you can’t shackle a thoroughbred like Josh Allen by constantly asking him to settle for low-risk plays. Her physical assets are so spectacular that it would be like owning a Ferrari and leaving it in the locked garage. Or teach a Formula 1 driver to savor the ecstasy of pressing the brake.

Allen said it himself after Monday’s loss: The way he plays the vital quarterback position is a double-edged sword. Its unique prowess may make you forget about brain cramps, but how tolerable are cramps?

Against the Jets, his three intercepted passes were unnecessary risks, sometimes in full double coverage. He also completed only four of his nine passes for 15 yards or more in the air, and it was precisely over this same distance that he was the victim of interceptions.

Find the limit

Allen will always be a bit cowboy in his approach. We need others like him. On the other hand, his pass interception rate went from 13th in 2020 to 17th in 2021, finally dropping to 22nd last year.

The Bills can tolerate Allen’s propensity to try to do too much, since he has games where he carries the team on his back. But when a quarterback finds himself among the worst in the league in terms of pass interception rate, the game becomes too dangerous. There is nothing like a change of heart to break the rhythm of an attack and sabotage troop morale.

Defenses adjust

After the 2021 season, several defensive coordinators around the league grew tired of being beaten with big home runs. They adjusted their coverage schemes so that opposing attacks made do with singles.

Quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes have adjusted to this reality and, while they still run for the fence from time to time, they have learned to be content with what the defense gives them.

So far, Allen seems simply allergic to this mold.

The fear, for the Bills and their fans, is not that suddenly Josh Allen has regressed and is no longer a good quarterback. This would be an implausible conclusion.

What is worrying is rather that Josh Allen, through his rebellious style, is demonstrating that he will never be safe from a horrible match when the stakes are high.

THE CHOICES OF JOURNAL

Packers de Green Bay (1-0) c. Falcons d’Atlanta (1-0)

NOT EASY AGAINST THE RACE

Both teams showed good things in week one. The Packers will have to strike early in the game to deprive the Falcons of what they really know how to do on offense, which is to run repeatedly. Quarterback Desmond Ridder didn’t show much last Sunday, but the running duo of Tyler Allgeier and Bijan Robinson is ideal. Robinson will be increasingly explosive and the Packers gave up 150 or more rushing yards eight times last year with a unit that has changed little.

Las Vegas Raiders (1-0) c. Buffalo Bills (0-1)

MORE RACING

The Bills need to diversify their offense by getting the ball to James Cook. Getty Images via AFP

Josh Allen deserves credit for not hiding by taking the blame for the defeat against the Jets, he who was the victim of four turnovers. There are his mistakes, but also the fact that he continues to get hit unnecessarily on plays where he could avoid contact. Aside from Maxx Crosby, however, the Raiders’ defense won’t stifle him like the Jets’. It might be time to give second-year running back James Cook more responsibility.

Baltimore Ravens (1-0) c. Cincinnati Bengals (0-1)

TIME TO BOUNCE BACK

Life hasn’t been easy for Joe Burrow against the Browns. Getty Images via AFP

Joe Burrow and the Bengals will never have a performance as pathetic as last week’s performance twice in a row. We told you how much Burrow always struggled against the Browns, but we still fell for it. Against the Ravens, life smiled on him more. He averaged 311.2 yards against them, with 15 touchdown passes in five starts. If he really remains in neutral, it’s because his calf hasn’t healed as well as he wants to say.

Seahawks de Seattle (0-1) c. Lions de Detroit (1-0)

LESSON IN HUMILITY ?

What if the worst thing had happened to the Lions, beating the Chiefs in week one and believing they had reached the top of the mountain? They seem totally serious and we won’t predict such an implosion for them this week. The Seahawks will be better this season than their sad failed theatrical debut last Sunday, but their two starting blockers, Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas, are lame. On the other hand, Aidan Hutchinson is rubbing his hands at this scenario.

Colts d’Indianapolis (0-1) c. Texans de Houston (0-1)

SURPRISING DEFENSE

In addition to the fact that two rookie quarterbacks are facing each other, it should be noted that the Texans’ defensive front looked very good last week despite the loss against the Ravens. Defensive players hit Lamar Jackson seven times, including four quarterback sacks. Anthony Richardson is also a mobile quarterback, but no more so than Jackson. Young quarterback chaser Will Anderson looks dominant. This is what can make the difference in this duel.

Chiefs de Kansas City (0-1) c. Jaguars de Jacksonville (1-0)

NOT TWICE IN A ROW

Chris Jones will be back after his contract dispute. Getty Images via AFP

The Chiefs are banking on the return of tackle Chris Jones, as is tight end Travis Kelce. It will be a welcome reinforcement and the Chiefs receivers will never be as disgusting as in the first game. Patrick Mahomes has the art of rebounding, since after a loss, his career record is 13-3, with 42 touchdown passes in these games. The Jaguars will provide good opposition, but they don’t have the tools to put pressure on Mahomes.

Bears de Chicago (0-1) c. Buccaneers de Tampa Bay (1-0)

A MIRAGE ?

The Buccaneers won their first game of the season. Getty Images via AFP

The Buccaneers strut with a victory, but doubt lingers. They only scored 20 points and amassed a meager 242 yards on offense, even though their defense gave them three turnovers against the Vikings. There are still questions that arise about this attack whose ground game is pitiful (2.2 yards on average on 33 carries last Sunday). Well, it’s not like Justin Fields and the Bears were any more convincing. Heads or tails…

Chargers de Los Angeles (0-1) c. Titans du Tennessee (0-1)

TOWARDS THE END ?

Ryan Tannehill had a tough outing against the Saints. Getty Images via AFP

If not for a pitiful performance from Ryan Tannehill with three interceptions and only 16 of his 34 passes completed, the Titans had every chance of toppling the Saints. It is reasonable to believe that the rope will not be long in his case and that head coach, Mike Vrabel, could turn to his two young backup quarterbacks if necessary, Malik Willis and Will Levis. The Chargers defense gave up 536 yards on Sunday, but the offense will get the job done.

New York Giants (0-1) c. Arizona Cardinals (0-1)

THINGS TO BE FORGIVED

Let’s hope the Giants got all the bad stuff out of their system in their extremely stinky first game. They have what it takes to revive against the Cardinals, but the state of their offensive line is worrying with the injury to Andrew Thomas. The good news is that the Cardinals’ defensive front wouldn’t hurt a fly. The poor Cards still fought well last week. That’s a bit like the drama. Their highest potential has been reached.

San Francisco 49ers (1-0) c. Los Angeles Rams (1-0)

THE PURDY EFFECT

Brock Purdy has had no shortage of opportunities to celebrate in recent months. Getty Images via AFP

The 49ers aren’t all about Brock Purdy, but when the young quarterback plays, he inspires the offense. In the 10 games he was in charge (excluding his quick exit in the conference final), the offense averaged 29 points, with 18 touchdowns through the air. He plays with great confidence, while carrier Christian McAffrey is a monster. The Rams surprised last week, but the Niners have their number with eight wins in nine games, five of them by more than a touchdown.

New York Jets (1-0) v. Dallas Cowboys (1-0)

FROM AARON TO ZACH…

The Jets can say whatever they want… they have full confidence in Zach Wilson in place of Aaron Rodgers. He gained experience and maturity. It will be well supported and will do the job. The official speech is cute as all hell, but the reality is that only defense can save this team. If Wilson does the minimum without too many turnovers, the Jets will remain competitive. That would be a lot to ask of him against the Cowboys, who have led the league in turnovers for two years.

Commanders de Washington (1-0) c. Broncos de Denver (0-1)

NEW BRONCOS ?

After all that has been said about the impact of Sean Payton’s arrival on the Broncos’ offense, it’s hard to get excited about the first sample. Russell Wilson didn’t play badly, but only gained 177 yards through the air on 27 completions. He only added a small yard to the ground. We’re not going to bury them after a week. The Commanders’ attack didn’t convince anyone against the Cardinals either. Don’t put yourself through this television pain, but the Broncos will bounce back.

Miami Dolphins (1-0) v. New England Patriots (0-1)

SHOCK OF DIVISION

Tureek Hill and Jaylen Waddle continue to assert themselves. Getty Images via AFP

Despite the loss, the Patriots limited the damage and looked pretty good defensively against the Eagles. We should therefore not believe that the Dolphins will indulge in an aerial backlash as intense as that of last week against the Chargers. If it’s a low-scoring game, the Dolphins may find themselves in trouble with their more finesse football. It’s hard to see, however, where the Patriots will find the speed to constantly slow down Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Limit them? Yes, but not neutralize them.

New Orleans Saints (1-0) v. Carolina Panthers (0-1)

CARR WELL SUPPORTED

Will rookie quarterback Bryce Young be more convincing than when he started? He hasn’t done anything great in Atlanta and on paper, he’s facing a more intimidating defense. He could improve from week to week, but his receivers don’t help him too much, aside from a few flashes from another rookie, Jonathan Mingo. Derek Carr looked good in his first game with the Saints and benefited from three receivers (Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed and Michael Thomas) contributing.

Browns the Cleveland (1-0) c. Steelers the Pittsburgh (0-1)

REVERSED ROLES

TJ Watt is the centerpiece of the Steelers defense. Getty Images via AFP

In week one, the Browns were among the big winners by suffocating the Bengals, while the Steelers looked like toddlers in diapers against the 49ers. So why trust the Steelers? Because their defensive front should benefit from the fact that the Browns lost star tackle Jack Conklin. For the record, know that the Steelers have won 20 consecutive Monday night games at home and 19 consecutive games at home against the Browns.
