The tongue scraper is an object that you see more and more, especially on social networks. It is presented as the best remedy against bad breath. It comes in plastic, copper or even steel and costs between 5 and 10 euros.
For dentists, it can be useful, but not alone, as Dr Jérémy Amzalag, dental surgeon, explains:“When you eat, there are food deposits that get on the tongue and form volatile compounds that give this bad breath. Using a tongue scraper helps eliminate and get rid of these compounds.”
But beware : “The tongue scraper is a complement to oral hygiene which can and must also be combined with brushes and interdental floss which allow the spaces between the teeth to be cleaned. These also help reduce bad breath and the risks of loosening”, specifies the specialist.
When to use a tongue scraper?
The tongue scraper should not be used every day, but rather two or three times a week maximum. The risk, if you use it too much, is to disrupt the microbiota oral – the bacteria naturally present in the mouth – the balance of the mouth and to see the development of fungi or fungus on the tongue. So only use it when you have a lot of whitish deposits on the language.
For the gesture, stay delicate, no need to strip your tongue. As for the model, all materials are equal, according to Dr. Amzalag.
Brushing your tongue is a bad idea
Many people may also be tempted to clean their tongue with their toothbrush. This is a bad idea, because even if you go very gently and the bristles are soft, it is not suitable and this action risks creating micro-lesions on the tongue where bad bacteria can enter. This would be totally counterproductive.
Finally, be careful to clean your tongue scraper well and not use it if you have a aphte or a small cut on the tongue.
