Isolating the Russian Security Council: Exceptional Success

Relations between Moscow and other UN member states have deteriorated rapidly since Russia invaded Ukraine, and one of the five permanent members of the Security Council has been expelled from several UN bodies, including the Human Rights Council.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who has chaired the Security Council since May, told a news conference today that the council was functioning normally, adding that the council had been “isolating Russia” since the end of February. “Unusually successful”.

Thomas-Greenfield pointed out that Russia has the veto power, thus avoiding the fate of being condemned by the Security Council, but with the strong support of the Security Council, the UN General Assembly was able to successfully unite the voices of all parties to condemn Russia, “really an extraordinary achievement.”

“Russia is isolated in the Security Council, and every time the Security Council discusses matters related to Russia, Russia is on the defensive, and we will keep them on the defensive until their brutal attack on Ukraine is over,” she told the media.
