Israel Admits Soldiers Fired at Hind Rajab’s Car, Opens Criminal Probe

IDF Reverses Course on January 2024 Gaza City Shooting

In a significant shift, the Israel Defense Forces have acknowledged that their soldiers fired at the vehicle carrying five-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza City during a January 2024 military advance, according to reporting by The Guardian. The admission marks a reversal from the military’s earlier assertions that its forces were neither near the vehicle nor within firing range when the incident occurred.

Alongside the admission, the Israeli military has opened a criminal investigation into the killing, as detailed by BBC News.

Chronology of the Disastrous Evacuation Attempt

On January 29, 2024, young Hind was travelling with relatives as they attempted to flee advancing troops in Gaza City, according to Gulf News. Their vehicle came under fire, resulting in the deaths of five occupants while Hind and her cousin, Layan Hamada, initially survived the initial barrage.

During the harrowing aftermath, Hind and Layan contacted the Palestinian Red Crescent Society to plead for assistance, and recordings of their desperate emergency calls subsequently drew worldwide attention. An ambulance carrying two Red Crescent paramedics was dispatched after its movement was coordinated to reach them. According to allegations cited by the Israeli military, a shell was fired toward the ambulance when it arrived, killing both paramedics inside. Twelve days after the initial incident, Hind’s body was recovered from the bullet-riddled car alongside the bodies of her relatives.

Global Artistic Resonance and Legal Scrutiny

Her story was portrayed in The Voice of Hind Rajab, a production that earned an Oscar nomination in 2026.
