An official who was not named by the newspaper responded to the report by stressing that Israel is not an American “protectorate,” and its citizens choose their government.

A senior Israeli political official accused the administration of US President Joe Biden of trying to overthrow the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that Israel is not a “protectorate” of the United States, and its citizens are the ones who choose their government.

On Wednesday, the Hebrew newspaper “The Jerusalem Post” quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying, “The Biden administration is trying to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”

The official added: “We expect our friends to work to overthrow the Hamas regime and not the elected government in Israel,” as he put it.

The newspaper referred to an official American report that stated that “Netanyahu’s ability to remain as leader, as well as his ruling formation of extremist right-wing and religious parties that pursue hard-line policies on Palestinian and security issues, may be in doubt.”

The report added that “distrust in Netanyahu’s ability to govern has deepened and expanded among the public compared to its already high levels before the war.”

The American report continued: “We expect large protests demanding his (Netanyahu’s) resignation and the holding of new elections. The formation of a different, more moderate government is possible.”

According to the newspaper, the Israeli official responded to the American report by saying: “Israeli citizens, not anyone else, are the ones who elect the prime minister.”

He added: “Israel is not a protectorate of the United States, but rather an independent and democratic state, whose citizens choose the government,” as he put it.

Recent weeks have witnessed an escalation in disagreements between Netanyahu and Biden against the backdrop of the war in Gaza, according to Israeli and American media reports.

Since the outbreak of the war, Washington has been providing Tel Aviv with the strongest possible military, intelligence, and diplomatic support, even in light of what appear to be disagreements between Biden and Netanyahu regarding the huge number of civilian casualties, and Israeli restrictions on bringing humanitarian aid into Gaza, as well as the future of the Strip after the war.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with American support, has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip that has left tens of thousands of civilian victims, most of them children and women, a humanitarian catastrophe and massive infrastructure destruction, which led to Tel Aviv appearing before the International Court of Justice on charges of “genocide.”

As a result of the war and Israeli restrictions, the residents of Gaza, especially the Gaza and North governorates, are on the verge of famine, in light of a severe scarcity of food, water, medicine and fuel supplies, with the displacement of about two million Palestinians from the Strip, which has been besieged by Israel for 17 years.
