The Israeli army released an aerial video, showing hundreds of Palestinians gathering around aid trucks

At least 112 Palestinians were killed and 760 people were injured in Gaza City while trying to reach urgently needed humanitarian aid on Thursday afternoon (February 29).

As a convoy of trucks carrying humanitarian aid arrived on the coastal road southwest of Gaza City in the middle of the Strip, crowds of Palestinians crowded around it, coinciding with the deployment of Israeli tanks.

The Israeli army said that the tanks fired warning shots but “did not fire” at the trucks, adding that a large number of those killed were run over.

Hamas rejected Israel’s account, saying there was “undeniable” evidence of “direct shooting at citizens.”

The position of France, the United States and the United Nations

France said that “the shooting by Israeli soldiers of civilians trying to obtain food” is “unjustified.”

US President Joe Biden also expressed his concern that this incident would complicate the efforts of mediators seeking to reach a temporary ceasefire in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned what happened, saying that “desperate civilians in Gaza need urgent assistance, including those in the north, where the United Nations has not been able to deliver aid for more than a week.”

Hamas warned that the talks, which are being held in Qatar, with the aim of reaching a new agreement for a new ceasefire, may be at risk of suspension, at the present time.

What happened at the Nabulsi roundabout?

Israeli military aerial footage showed hundreds of people in and around the trucks, while video clips posted online showed bodies being loaded onto empty aid trucks and donkey carts.

Thursday’s incident occurred shortly after 4:45 p.m. (2:45 GMT) at the Nabulsi roundabout, on the southwestern edge of Gaza City.

A convoy of 30 trucks loaded with Egyptian aid was making its way north along what the Israeli army described as a “humanitarian corridor” when it was surrounded by civilians, and people climbed onto the top of the trucks.

A Palestinian eyewitness, who spoke to the BBC, described the state of panic among the crowds and drivers who tried to move forward, and added that most of those killed “died by being run over.”

Meanwhile, officials at Kamal Adwan and Al-Awda Hospital, in addition to two other hospitals, said that all or most of the victims receiving treatment there were injured by “gunshots or shrapnel.”

Tamer Shinbari, who was in Al-Shifa Hospital hugging the body of his deceased friend, told the BBC that he went to the Nabulsi roundabout hoping to get a bag of flour for his family.

He added that Israeli soldiers “opened fire” and “the aid truck ran over the bodies.”

Dozens of injured people were transferred in critical or serious condition to the nearby Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where paramedics were unable to deal with the number of cases and the serious injuries.

Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said: “Some began violently pushing other Gazans, trampling them to death, and looting humanitarian supplies,” explaining that Israeli tanks “cautiously tried to disperse the crowds by firing a few warning shots.” But she withdrew “when hundreds became thousands, and things got out of control.”

Kamal Adwan Hospital officials in Beit Lahia said they received dead and wounded from western Gaza City.

This incident came hours before the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced that more than 30,000 people, including 21,000 children and women, had been killed in the Strip since the start of the current conflict on October 7.
