The Israeli army had spent around a week on the grounds of the Al-Shifa Hospital, which they suspected was an operations center for the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas. On Sunday, the army said it had found a 55-meter-long tunnel ten meters deep beneath the clinic and a weapons cache. Yesterday, Israeli forces arrested the head of Al-Shifa Hospital, Mohammed Abu Salmiya.
Since the start of the Israeli military operation, a majority of the estimated 2,300 patients as well as staff and displaced civilians have been removed from the hospital. The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was “extremely concerned” about the remaining 100 patients and hospital staff.
