JERUSALEM: Israeli forces are using carnivorous birds to find the bodies of those killed in the October 7 attack by Hamas. This is done by attaching a tracking device to the body of hawks, eagles, and other birds in this category and tracking their movements after releasing them. This was disclosed by a wildlife researcher working with this project of the army.

Ohad Hatzoff, a researcher at Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority, said the idea was put forward by EITAN, an army unit that works to find missing soldiers. He added that the army sought his help in using birds to locate civilians in distress.

Ohad Hatsoff leads the project using endangered griffon vultures, which feed mainly on dead animals. In addition, around 100 other cormorants are being monitored with the device.

Ohad said the sea eagle, which belongs to the rare bird category, was spotted on October 23 in Israeli airspace in Beri, outside the Gaza Strip, and the information was passed on to the forces. Ohad added that four dead bodies were found after tracking the bird. He added that some other bodies were found with the help of birds.
