Israeli strike on Gaza funeral kills at least seven, hospital says
An Israeli strike on a funeral procession in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza has killed at least seven people and injured 22 others, according to officials at Al-Awda Hospital. Witnesses stated that the drone strike targeted mourners who had gathered outside the Ahmad Yassin Mosque on Friday to begin a funeral procession for a Palestinian who had been killed in a separate attack earlier that same day. The strike occurred in the Al-Balata market area of the camp.

Military response and stated objectives
The Israeli military confirmed it carried out the strike. In a statement, the army claimed to have targeted a “terrorist” cell in central Gaza. The military added that it was aware of reports that uninvolved individuals may have been harmed and stated that the results of the strike are currently under review. This incident follows a broader pattern of military activity in the enclave. Hamas condemned the attack, describing it as a systematic violation of the ceasefire agreement established in October.
Context of the ongoing conflict
The ceasefire, which was intended to halt a two-year-long war between Israel and Hamas, has been described by various observers as fragile or ineffective. While major, large-scale combat has subsided, Israel has continued to conduct near-daily strikes across the Gaza Strip. According to data from the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 1,123 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire took effect. The ministry’s casualty records are considered generally reliable by independent experts and United Nations agencies. The total number of Palestinian deaths since the beginning of the Israeli offensive has reached over 73,000. On the Israeli side, five soldiers have been killed since the ceasefire began.

Escalation in military activity
Research groups tracking the conflict have noted a recent increase in hostilities. The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) project reported that Israeli attacks in the enclave have escalated since May. The increased frequency of these strikes has drawn scrutiny regarding the viability of the current truce. In addition to the strike at the Nuseirat refugee camp, multiple other attacks were reported across Gaza on Friday, including drone strikes and shelling in Beit Lahia, Az-Zawayda, and Gaza City. These operations have resulted in further casualties, including among displaced civilians living in makeshift shelters.

Humanitarian and political stakes
For the nearly 2 million people residing in Gaza, the ongoing military activity has created a sense of instability. Residents and local officials have expressed that the ceasefire has not resulted in a return to normal life. The security situation remains a focal point of regional and international attention. Israel maintains that its strikes are necessary responses to shooting attacks on its troops and other violations by militants. Conversely, Palestinian groups and international organizations have raised concerns regarding the protection of civilians and the distinction between combatants and non-combatants during these operations. As the situation evolves, the impact of these strikes continues to complicate efforts to stabilize the region and address the extensive infrastructure damage caused by the two-year conflict.
