Israel’s military has urged all civilians to leave Gaza City. This would affect around 1.1 million people, half of the population of the Gaza Strip. They should go to the south of the Palestinian territory. There will be military operations in Gaza City in the next few days. The return would only be permitted after a further corresponding announcement from the military. This is necessary to protect civilians.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement in New York that the Israeli military’s order, which was received by the U.N. in Gaza shortly before midnight Thursday, also applies to all U.N. staff and those working in U.N. facilities such as schools, people accommodated in health centers and clinics. The UN believes it is impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences, said Dujarric.
The radical Islamic group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, initially described the call as “fake news” and called on residents of the area to ignore the order.
