In the first quarter of this year, my country’s pig production capacity returned to the normal range. Yang Zhenhai, director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said that in 2021, my country’s live pig production will return to normal levels. Affected by the inertial growth of production, the number of live pigs will continue to increase in the first quarter of this year. At the end of the first quarter, there were 41.85 million breeding sows in the country, equivalent to 102.1% of the normal population of 41 million, which is in a green and reasonable area for production capacity control.
Yang Zhenhai said that the overall price of live pigs declined in the first quarter, and the supply and demand of pork has improved due to the combination of factors such as the increase in pork consumption during the Qingming holiday and market regulation. In late March, the price of live pigs ended a 16-week continuous downward trend and stabilized and rebounded.
He introduced that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has successively held symposiums for pig breeding enterprises and department coordination meetings, released production warning information through media and other platforms, urged localities to implement live pig production capacity control plans, and opened hotlines in time to help farm households solve production, sales and circulation difficulties. In the next step, the following three aspects will be done:
– Stable production. Strengthen monitoring and early warning, guide farm households to rationally arrange production, urge local governments to stabilize support policies, help farm households, and prevent excessive decline in production capacity. In response to the problem that the transportation of feed, veterinary drugs, and animal products has been blocked due to epidemic prevention and control in some areas, the coordination mechanism of the ministry and the province has been brought into play, and every effort has been made to help farmers solve problems and maintain the order of production and sales.
Yang Zhenhai said that according to the forecast of the expert team, with the continuous accumulation of favorable factors such as the high number of newborn piglets and the high decline in feed costs, pig farming is expected to turn losses into profits in the third quarter, but uncertainties still exist.
