After a series of complaints, the Meta finally added the possibility of delete account on Threads regardless of Instagram. The news was announced by the boss of the two social networks, Adam Mosseriwhich highlighted that the feature was launched after user feedback.

Apparently not yet available on a large scale, the new option will be available in the “Accounts” section of the settings. In place of the current option to just “Deactivate profile”, the new “Delete or Deactivate Profile”. By tapping this item, the user will be able to choose between one of two options.

On the deletion/deactivation screen, Meta explains the nature of the two actions. While the option to deactivate the profile is temporary and can be reversed at any time by the user, the option to delete causes all content (including the profile, likes and followers) to be deleted.

Just like when deleting an account on Instagram, the user will have a 30-day window to opt out of the deletion. During this window, the account is as if it were deactivated (basically “hidden”) and will be permanently deleted if the user does not attempt to log in during this period.

The option to delete accounts is already available on the app’s support page. According to Meta, although deleting an account on Threads does not affect the Instagram account, the opposite does not apply — that is, it is not possible to delete Instagram and keep the Threads account, as the latter inherits the information from the former.

After permanently deleting the data, the user will have to wait at least 90 days if they want to register again on Threads with the same Instagram account. This is because this is the deadline for the company to delete all data from its servers.

Anyone out there already able to enjoy the new feature?
