“It is part of a larger discussion”

Last February, to help Belgians face the various increases linked to the war in Ukraine, the federal government decided on a package of support measures, including limiting VAT to 6% on electricity for 4 months (from March to June). For the past few weeks, many voices have been raised in favor of extending this measure definitively. This was particularly the case at the beginning of the month of the president of the Open Vld Egbert Lachaert who expected that the 6% VAT on gas and electricity be extended beyond next winter and who gave a layer of it this week in Het Laatste Nieuws.

This Sunday, on the VTM JT set, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo gave a more moderate speech. See even negative in the long term. Indeed, this does not guarantee that the VAT on electricity will remain permanently at 6%. This measure is not obvious. “As long as prices are high, VAT on electricity will remain at 6% this winter. If the prices are still so high in August and September, we will of course not increase the VAT to 21%. There is no discussion on that, ”reassures Alexander De Croo before admitting that the definitive extension is not guaranteed. “It will be part of a larger discussion,” he admits.
