It will soon be possible to unlock your iPhone with a mask (without Apple Watch)

It was the first beta of iOS 15.4 that revealed the new feature.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, it’s a problem that all iPhone users know: unlocking your smartphone while wearing a mask. Since the most recent models of the headed smartphone are equipped with Face ID, the iPhone needs to see your face in its entirety to unlock.

In August 2021, iPhone owners saw a glimmer of hope, but their enthusiasm quickly died down. With iOS 14.5, Apple allowed you to unlock your iPhone with a mask, but this required having an Apple Watch and wearing it on your wrist. A decision that is all in all useful, but which left people who did not have a smartwatch in the dark.

Finally, it seems that Apple has learned the lesson and heard the criticisms of its customers. This Thursday evening, Apple Park unveiled the first beta of iOS 15.4, in which we discover … the possibility of unlocking your iPhone with a mask without having to have an Apple Watch! A news that should, for sure, delight iPhone owners.

More powerful sensors

Concretely, Apple has made the TrueDepth sensors of its iPhones more efficient. The firm has indeed stated that they are able to “recognize unique features around the eye” for authentication purposes.

As is already the case now, you will have to look at your iPhone to unlock it with Face ID. However, Apple nevertheless insisted on specifying that if Face ID will be functional with a mask, the system will remain more secure by scanning the complete part of the face, and not only the eyes and ears.

On the other hand, nothing indicates when iOS 15.4 will be available. However, if you want to have the functionality before everyone else, you can feel free to join the beta testing program for free.
