Italian women’s gold in Nanjing

The Italian swordsmen won the gold medal in the team event that closed the world cup stage in Nanjing, in China. After yesterday’s success of Giulia Rizzi and the bronze of Alberta Santuccio in the individual test, the two athletes together with Rossella Fiamingo and Mara Navarria they climbed onto the podium again, beating hosts China in the final. The team of Italian epee players, already qualified for Paris 2024, immediately started with determination: in the round of 16 they defeated Israel 45-30 and then the United States 42-33 in the quarterfinals. In the semi-final, Italy got the better of Hungary (45-39), prevailing in the last act. Against China, for six out of nine fractions, the Italians were at a slight disadvantage, then, in the last round of attacks there was a comeback: +3 for Rizzi and Fiamingo and +4 for Santuccio who dug to dig a score that was worth 43-34 for Italy.
