Highway Diesel Surges Past 2,200 Euros
Fuel prices across Italy climbed sharply over the August 22 weekend, hitting a high of 2,200 euros per liter for diesel on highways as millions of motorists embarked on their first post-Ferragosto return travel wave, according to data released by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.
Impending Expiration Drives Market Pressure
The nationwide surge coincides with the upcoming August 25 expiration of the government’s extended excise tax cut on diesel.
Gasoline Prices Tick Up at the Pump
Official figures show that average self-service prices on Italy’s national road network reached 2,008 euros per liter for gasoline on Saturday, ticking up slightly from 2,005 euros the previous day. Along the autostrada network, gasoline prices increased to 2,085 euros per liter compared to 2,080 euros on Friday, based on data provided by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.
Steepest Increases Hit Motorway Network
Diesel costs experienced a more pronounced upward movement over the same 24-hour window. Self-service diesel at pumps along standard roadways rose to 2,128 euros per liter on Saturday, up from 2,122 euros a day earlier. The steepest figures emerged on the motorway network, where self-service diesel climbed to 2,200 euros per liter, advancing from 2,186 euros on Friday, according to the ministry.

Financial Burden Mounts for Summer Travelers
The continuous climb in fuel expenses places a heavy financial burden on travelers navigating the peak summer counter-exodus period. With the temporary excise relief for diesel scheduled to lapse on August 25, motorists face further cost pressures as institutional deadlines approach without a confirmed extension from the government.
