This is one of the good news from the Le Bourget air show. Despite the differences between France and Italy, Rome has decided to join the Franco-British FMAN/FMC program, the future anti-ship missiles and cruise missiles, according to our information. Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu met Tuesday morning with his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto, who decided to join the program. A letter of intent was signed Tuesday morning by the authorities of the three countries. At the same time, Emmanuel Macron and Giorgia Meloni have shown their intention to ” work together “ beyond “controversies”especially on the thorny issue of immigration which has so far poisoned their relations.

Led by MBDA, the FMAN/FMC program should replace by 2030 the current generation of cruise missiles in service with the British armed forces – Storm Shadow (Royal Air Force) and American anti-ship Harpoon from Boeing (Royal Navy ) – as well as in the French forces – SCALP (Air Force) and Exocet (National Navy). This program, which is part of the rationalization process initiated by the Lancaster House agreements, is the most structuring and dimensioning program of Franco-British cooperation in the field of missiles.

A crucial program for Paris and London

Paris and London had launched in March 2017 as part of the Franco-British program the joint concept study. These two missiles are part of one of the most important capability programs for France and the United Kingdom. The two countries also committed last March to making concrete progress in developing the program to avoid capability shortfalls. In particular, they had committed to presenting a future cruise capability by 2030.

The future military programming law (LPM) will make it possible to make a significant effort in the field of first entry – capability to destroy enemy anti-aircraft defenses (SEAD) -, with the development of the Rafale F5 and the FMAN/ FMC, which will deal with ground-to-air defenses.
