After the opening defeat against France, Italy clinched an immensely important victory at the U21 European Championships in Georgia & Romania in the 2nd match against Switzerland. The Azzurrini had to tremble despite the 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, Germany’s U21s are threatened with extinction.

In Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Italy took the lead against Switzerland after just 6 minutes: Salernitana’s Lorenzo Pirola headed in from a corner. Wilfried Gnonto increased to 2:0 after only 11 minutes. The Swiss goalie Saipi had parried his header, but Gnonto pushed the rebound over the line. When Fabiani Parisi scored to make it 3-0 before the break, the preliminary decision seemed to have already been made.

After the break, however, the Confederates came up trumps. 2 minutes after the restart, Kastriot Imeri flicked the ball into the top left corner, which is worth seeing and untenable. In the 52nd minute, Zeki Amdouni prevailed against the Italian defense and scored to make it 2:3. As a result, the Confederates continued to apply pressure and also demanded 2 penalties, but the referee’s whistle remained silent. In the end, it was the all-important 3-2 win for Italy. The Azzurrini are back in the fight for progress after the much-discussed opening defeat against France.

Germany before the early end

Germany, on the other hand, is about to be eliminated from the group stage for the first time since 2013. Coach Antonio Di Salvo’s team lost their second tournament game 2-1 (0-1) against the Czech Republic in Batumi (Georgia) on Sunday. After the 1-1 draw against Israel at the start, the DFB selection is third in its preliminary group with just one point. In the last group match against England on Wednesday, the defending champions need a win and hope for support to progress. The goals for the Czechs were scored by Vaclav Sejk (33rd minute) and Martin Vitik (87th). Angelo Stiller’s goal (70′) wasn’t enough for the German team.
