New Delhi – Italy has signaled its intention to withdraw from Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative. Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni discussed this with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang during the G20 summit held in Delhi.

During the meeting on Saturday, Meloni announced that Italy wants to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative. But Italy also stated that it wants to maintain good friendly relations with Beijing. Italy’s change of heart comes as diplomatic relations with the US might be strained over the project.

Italy officially signed the agreement in 2019. The ‘Belt and Road’ is China’s large trade network connecting various countries. As an alternative to this, India-West Asia-Europe Economic Corridor through rail and shipping was agreed at the G20 summit.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the G20 Summit. The project will enable cargo transportation from India to West Asian countries including the Gulf and then to Europe by train. Apart from India and the European Union, the project also includes countries like the US, Saudi Arabia, UAE, France, Jordan, Israel and Germany. The idea of the project was initiated by India and the US.
