“It’s just a pity”: Peter Herzog has to wait longer for a marathon

Marathon record holder Peter Herzog suffered the next setback on the way to the 2024 Olympics. Why he doesn’t start in Berlin and how he wants to get out of the trough.

Next break for the 36-year-old from Saalfelden: following a good training camp in St. Moritz and good sessions at home, he developed hip pain. For Herzog, the diagnosis of bursitis means the cancellation of the planned start at the Berlin marathon at the end of September. And the continuation of a bad luck series. Since the Olympic marathon in Sapporo 2021 he might only start in Berlin 2022. In between, injuries and illnesses threw him back once more and once more. Most recently, an irritation in the thigh in April at the Rotterdam marathon prevented.

“I don’t even put the word planning in my mouth anymore,” Herzog told the magazine “RunAustria” and revealed that the situation “mentally pulled the plug on him”. Being stopped once more and once more as a competitive type is “simply a pity”.

His trainer Johannes Langer and he are currently working out a plan B to make the second Olympic participation possible. Incidentally, the World Championship marathon, which takes place in Budapest on Sunday, was not a consideration for him. He would even have been in the starting field (like the second Langer protégé Eva Wutti with the women) because many nations did not make use of their contingents.
