Manchester United and Manchester City played the Manchester Derby in the 20th round of the 2022-23 season English Premier League (EPL) on the 14th (Korean time). The result was Manchester United’s 2-1 come-from-behind victory. Manchester United (38 points) won 3 points and narrowed the gap with Man City (39 points).
The controversial scene was the moment when Bruno Fernandez equalized in the 34th minute of the second half. Marcus Rashford was in an offside position when Casemiro passed a pass into the space behind the City defence. Rashford did not touch the ball but followed the ball and at that moment Fernandez shot. Manchester City claimed an offside following Rashford’s involvement, but it was disallowed.
Criticism poured in for the scene after the match. Michael Owen said: “Without Rashford, the defenders would have followed the ball quickly. It is clearly offside.” The British BBC also expressed a position that it was difficult to understand, saying, “The assistant referee’s flag was raised, but onside was declared.”
It’s one of the worst decisions this season, but claims have been made that there has been one more game than this. The British ‘Sports Bible’ reported on the 18th, “Incumbent referee Graham Paul picked the decision from the second round between Chelsea and Tottenham this season as the worst.”
At the end of the second half, Tottenham’s Christian Romero pulled Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella’s hair. Even though the scene was captured on the relay screen, referee Anthony Taylor at the time did not make any decision. Even Tottenham manager Antonio Conte and then-Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel had a war of words while shaking hands.
