September is the season for harvests and new watch launches. Some of them really make you want to move forward: IWC has, in fact, just unveiled the two special editions of its Large Pilot’s Watch inspired by the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. A partner of the German car manufacturer for almost twenty years, the Schaffhausen factory pays a fitting tribute to the famous all-terrain vehicle. And above all amply justified, since the latter and the legendary timepiece share a similar history.
Originally, both were developed to meet purely functional criteria: the Large Pilot’s Watch had to be perfectly readable and very robust, the G Class was designed to guarantee comfort and capacity without compromise on all terrains. Over the years, both have managed to maintain their practical origins while acquiring the status of icons of modern design.
IWC’s challenge consists of mixing, in a dynamic and elegant way, their respective stylistic codes. The two watches thus revisit characteristic elements of the most adventurous Mercedes-Benz, such as its front headlights, reincarnated in the white-rimmed apertures of the small seconds counter and the display of the generous seven-day power reserve. The relief impression of the carefully structured black dials is inspired by the cold air intakes of a high-performance Mercedes-AMG engine.

To get started, IWC offers the choice between the refinement of a case in Armor Gold (special alloy significantly harder and more resistant than red gold) and the sportiness of a case in CMC (ceramic matrix composite) . Designed in close collaboration with the German Center for Aeronautics and Astronautics, this unique material integrates carbon fibers into a ceramic matrix rather than a polymer. Consequently, it is perfectly resistant to damage and insensitive to thermal shock.
If CMC is making its debut at IWC, its lightness and strength also make it a material of choice for aerospace and the brake discs of luxury cars. Its ultra-complex thermal manufacturing process lasts several days and results in a texture randomly determined by the fibers.
Each piece made in CMC is therefore unique! The two special editions of the Large Pilot’s Watch AMG 63 are powered by a high-end manufacture movement: the automatic caliber 52010, extremely robust and precise.

Developed in the 1940s by Albert Pellaton, former technical director of IWC, its automatic winding system uses the smallest movements of the oscillating weight to store a seven-day power reserve in two barrels. Today, the most stressed components of this ingenious winding device are made of zirconium oxide ceramic, which is almost indestructible.
The AMG 63 Large Pilot’s Watches in Armor Gold 750/1000 and CMC are available in IWC boutiques or in the brand’s e-boutique. Good to know: both timepieces benefit from the “My IWC” program, which allows them to be registered in order to extend the standard two-year international warranty by an additional six years.
