James Pearce suspended 8 games by NFL after offseason domestic-violence arrest

Atlanta Falcons linebacker James Pearce received an eight-game suspension from the NFL on Friday following an offseason domestic-violence arrest near Miami. The 2025 first-round draft pick, who entered a pretrial intervention program in April, will be eligible to return to the active roster in Week 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid.

Offseason Arrest and Legal Status

The suspension stems from a February incident involving Pearce and his ex-girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson. According to law enforcement records detailed in reporting, Pearce allegedly stalked Jackson and pursued her in a vehicle, causing a collision as she attempted to reach a police station. Authorities stated that Pearce subsequently fled from police in his car, leading to a pursuit that ended in a crash and his subsequent apprehension on foot.

The initial charges filed near Miami included multiple felony and misdemeanor counts. Court records indicate Pearce faced charges for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing or eluding police with lights or siren, aggravated battery involving a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer without violence to his person, aggravated stalking, and resisting an officer. One count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon was dropped in March.

In April, legal proceedings shifted when Pearce agreed to a six-month pretrial intervention program. Fulfilling the program’s requirements, which mandate staying away from Jackson, allows for all remaining charges to be dismissed. Under the terms of the agreement, successful completion results in no jail time and no admission of guilt as reported by NFL Network and cited in coverage.

NFL Disciplinary Action and Personal-Conduct Policy

Although the legal process involves a diversion program rather than a criminal conviction, the league maintains independent authority to penalize players under its personal-conduct policy. The NFL confirmed that it had been closely monitoring the situation since the winter arrest.

Pearce missed time during organized team activities following the arrest but participated fully when training camp opened. He remains eligible to play in all of Atlanta’s preseason matchups before the ban takes effect.

The league and the franchise officially announced the discipline on Friday, setting his return target for the team’s ninth game of the year.

Impact on the Atlanta Falcons Defense

The unit must also proceed without pass rusher Jalon Walker, who tore his ACL in training camp and will miss the entire 2026 campaign.

The two defenders arrived together as foundational pieces of the team’s draft strategy in 2025. The Falcons selected Walker 15th overall before trading up to secure the 26th pick, where they drafted Pearce. The edge rusher delivered an impressive debut season, accumulating 10.5 sacks across 17 games and finishing third in the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

Pearce will be eligible to rejoin the lineup when the Falcons travel overseas to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid in Week 9.
