Jamie Vardy’s YouTube Channel to Stream Live Bundesliga Games

Former England and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has secured the broadcasting rights for seven live Friday night Bundesliga matches on his YouTube channel, intensifying an ongoing streaming battle with Gary Neville and Gary Lineker.

A New Contender Enters the Creator Media Space

The 39-year-old forward is currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Italian side Cremonese, where he scored seven goals in 29 appearances. Vardy’s venture into live sports broadcasting builds on a broader strategy by the German top flight to target different demographics with contrasting viewing habits through content creators.

Rick Murray, chief executive of producers Workerbee, noted the changing habits of sports consumers. “Fans don’t just want to watch football anymore, they want to experience it with the people they already know and trust,” Murray said. “Jamie has built an incredible community around the podcast, and thanks to our Bundesliga partnership, we can bring that audience closer to some seriously big games.”

The Evolution of the Bundesliga Creator Rights Model

The Bundesliga broke traditional broadcasting boundaries in 2025 by becoming the first major league in Europe to award live rights in the UK to content creators. During the 2025-26 season, those Friday night fixtures were shared between The Overlap and Mark Goldbridge’s That’s Football, with matches also appearing on the BBC’s red button service.

For the 2026-27 season, the landscape has shifted significantly. Following The Overlap’s acquisition of Mark Goldbridge’s YouTube channels in April 2026, The Overlap will no longer show live games. Instead, The Overlap will focus on supplementary programming and interviews, while Goldbridge’s That’s Football has renewed its contract to show 15 live Friday night games. Vardy’s channel now takes The Overlap’s place as the second content creator.

The Broader Punditry Wars Across Streaming Giants

While Vardy builds an audience that currently stands at over 11,000 subscribers—dwarfed by the established numbers of Neville and Lineker’s shows—the wider punditry ecosystem is locking down multi-platform streaming deals. Gary Neville has partnered with Disney+ to carry his show Stick To Football alongside a Manchester United discussion show co-hosted by Goldbridge and Wayne Rooney. Meanwhile, Gary Lineker has secured a two-year deal with Netflix to stream The Rest Is Football following a successful run during the summer World Cup.

Despite lagging behind his competitors in subscriber counts, Vardy benefits from the backing of Banijay UK. As the production powerhouse behind major television formats like The Traitors, Survivor, and Big Brother, Banijay brings substantial television polish to Vardy’s newly minted YouTube venture.

What the Deal Means for Traditional and Free-to-Air Broadcasters

Even as digital creator channels claim a prominent stake in Friday night prime-time slots, the remainder of the UK and Ireland broadcasting rights package remains stable. Sky Sports continues its coverage of Saturday evening fixtures, Prime Sport holds the pay-per-view rights for Sunday matches, and Samsung TV retains free-to-air match broadcasts.

The financial incentive for the Bundesliga is clear, but the primary motivation remains audience discoverability. Last season, Goldbridge’s broadcast of Bayern Munich against RB Leipzig drew 236,000 viewers, proving that football fans are increasingly willing to consume live matches via creator-led digital channels rather than traditional television setups.
