At the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, some songs should also send messages. Jan Böhmermann didn’t like the message from Switzerland at all.

Liverpool – At the Eurovision Song Contest, Jan Böhmermann and Olli Schulz commented on the competition for the Austrian radio station FM4. Remo Forrer represented Switzerland with the song “Watergun”, an anti-war song that the two of them really liked, but came from the wrong corner. Accordingly, there was also clear criticism.

“Keep out of the shit for hundreds of years”: Böhmermann upsets the ESC song in Switzerland

“Now we come to Remo Forrer from Switzerland and that’s a really great song, because he sings about the fact that it’s stupid to take up arms and war is stupid,” said Jan Böhmermann sarcastically and at the video intro elaborates: “It’s easy to sing as Swiss people who have stayed out of all this shit for hundreds of years. As a Swiss, he’ll say right away that he doesn’t feel like joining the army. And as a non-Swiss you can call out to him: You don’t have to. Just stay out of it…”, and then Schulz interrupts with a laugh: “… and count your money”.

Laughter in the FM4 booth. “But we don’t want to get too political. Nevertheless, it is tricky not to think along communicatively. When singing a song, always consider where you are singing from. You’re Swiss, dude, you don’t do anything,” said Böhmermann about the contribution of the German neighbors to the ESC.

ESC song from Switzerland ends up in 20th place

Ironically, the two even sing along with the refrain: “I don’t wanna be a soldier, soldier”, only to add at the end: “I’ve done civil service,” says Böhmermann and says: “Great song and all, but this politicized thing makes me complete. You can’t sing a song like that as a Swiss. Especially as a Swiss”. In response to the song, the two entertainers opened the first bag of chips on the third song of the evening (here the tz.de ticker to read). In the end, Forrer came in 20th, with significantly more jury points than the audience.

What the two moderators didn’t know at the time was how the German appearance would work. Schulz later called Chris Harms’ outfit “withered sunflower stems”, Böhmermann could no longer contain himself during the break with the Imagine cover. Schulz also didn’t mince his words when it came to awarding points for Sweden. (ank)
