In the Kashiwanoha Smart City model city, where intelligent transportation systems are regularly tested, the universities of Tokyo and Chiba as well as the Ministry of Transportation are working on this novel project. According to a statement from the University of Tokyo, charging coils are embedded in the road surface in front of the traffic lights.

Special devices mounted on the electric cars near the tires can use them to draw power as soon as the vehicles slow down. According to the scientists, ten seconds of power consumption provides a range of around one kilometer. With just one minute of waiting, you could achieve a good six kilometers of additional range. That doesn’t sound like much, but it could be useful in stop-and-go urban traffic.
