Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is attending the United Nations General Assembly for the first time since forming a new cabinet, and is expected to focus on strengthening his diplomatic position.

Attention is focused on whether this will provide an opportunity to raise the stagnant approval rating.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is traveling to New York, USA to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

This is his first international appearance after carrying out a large-scale cabinet reshuffle, and Prime Minister Kishida is expected to emphasize UN reform amid arguments over the uselessness of the UN Security Council.

In particular, Russia, which invaded Ukraine, and North Korea, which continues its ballistic missile provocations, show signs of concretizing military cooperation through the recent summit meeting.

It is expected to further highlight the security threat and urge response and cooperation from related countries.

It is also reported that they are coordinating a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the occasion of the UN General Assembly.

In addition, new Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa will preside over the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in New York and meet with US Secretary of State Tony Blinken.

[가미카와 요코 / 일본 외무상 : 일본의 존재감을 알림과 동시에 세계 각국의 카운터 파트들과 신뢰 관계를 구축해 나가려고 합니다.]

Currently, the Kishida cabinet’s approval rating is not rising despite a large-scale cabinet reshuffle.

In a recent public opinion poll by the Yomiuri Shimbun, the approval rating was 35%, the same as last month, and according to the Mainichi Shimbun poll, it is at the lowest level at 25%.

The Kishida cabinet is expected to strive to lead major issues at this year’s UN General Assembly, as it reached its peak with an approval rating of 45-56% right after the G7 summit meeting last May.

Attention is being paid to whether the newly formed Kishida cabinet will be able to make a breakthrough in its stagnant approval rating through its diplomatic power on the international stage for the first time.
