The approval rating for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s cabinet has recovered to the 50% level.

In a poll conducted by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun between the 28th and 30th of last month, the Kishida cabinet’s approval rating was 52%.

Prime Minister Kishida’s approval rating remained in the 20-30% range until February of this year.

Since the second half of last year, the Japanese media has even used the expression ‘dangerous waters for maintaining the regime’ while repeatedly hitting the lowest level.

Then, the approval rating turned to a clear upward trend after the Korea-Japan summit held in Tokyo in March.

According to a survey by the Mainichi Shimbun, the approval rating, which stayed at 26% in February, jumped 7 percentage points right after the Korea-Japan summit.

The Japanese media analyzes that the approval rating reflects diplomatic achievements such as the decision to have a Korean company instead of a Japanese company to compensate for the damages caused by forced labor in Japan, and normalization of the Korea-Japan Military Information Security Agreement and GSOMIA.

″I would like to pay my respects from the bottom of my heart to President Yoon, who has shown difficult decisions and actions.″

The ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party, also won a landslide victory in the by-election for members of the National Assembly held on the 23rd of last month, winning in four out of five regions.

People around Prime Minister Kishida said, “The political common sense that ‘diplomacy does not lead to votes’ has been overturned.”

Fumitake Fujita, secretary-general of the right-leaning opposition party, Japan Restoration Association, also analyzed the factors for the rise in approval ratings, saying, “The public supports a certain degree of stability in the administration of the government, centered on diplomacy.”

As another Korea-Japan summit is expected to take place earlier this month, Japanese media are paying attention to whether Prime Minister Kishida’s approval rating can rise further.
