Japan’s Toll Fee Extension until 2115: All You Need to Know

TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) — Japan’s parliament on Wednesday announced the implementation of a law extending the country’s toll fee collection period by 50 years until 2115.

The extension was aimed at preserving the funds needed to renovate the old tunnels and bridges, the report said. Expressway revenues are expected to decline as the country’s population shrinks.

In addition, funds from the fee will be used to convert all expressways to four lanes, which will help ease traffic congestion and reduce risks.

Currently, regarding 40 percent of all expressways in Japan have only two lanes, and toll fees have been initiated to cover construction costs, the report added.

Japan’s toll tolls were originally scheduled to end by 2065, and following that, all tolls will no longer be charged.
