Madison Square Garden transformed into an unexpectedly intimate room on August 11, 2026, when Mumford & Sons welcomed both Jason Sudeikis and Oscar Isaac for surprise guest performances during their New York City residency.
The Ted Lasso Homecoming on the MSG Stage
The night’s first major surprise arrived midway through the performance when Jason Sudeikis stepped out from the wings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sudeikis had initially been spotted in the crowd nodding along to the music before smiling and sprinting onto the stage to join the band.
Sudeikis partnered directly with Marcus Mumford to deliver the opening theme song from Ted Lasso, the hit Apple TV+ series Sudeikis co-created and stars in. Following a playful slap on the rear end of Mumford & Sons member Ben Lovett, Sudeikis traded lines on the familiar tune as the Madison Square Garden crowd roared in approval.
The collaboration carried a genuine circular energy. Frontman Marcus Mumford has long maintained deep ties to the show’s musical identity, contributing multiple pieces of solo work and compositions to the Ted Lasso universe, including a 2020 rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Furthermore, the show’s theme song earned an Emmy nomination in 2021.
Mumford joked with the New York audience that he would “sic Ted on you” if they failed to quiet down during the set.
Oscar Isaac Delivers a Rare Deep Cut
The surprises continued later in the evening when actor Oscar Isaac took the stage to perform “Dink’s Song (Fare Thee Well).” The track marked a significant milestone for the headliners, as Mumford & Sons had never previously played the song live.
The collaboration originates from the soundtrack of the Coen Brothers’ 2013 musical drama Inside Llewyn Davis, a film that starred Isaac alongside Carey Mulligan. Isaac is far from a stranger to the Mumford circle, having performed live with the band on multiple occasions and recently appearing in their music video for the single “Here.”
Throughout the evening, the core band was augmented by violin and fiddle player Rob Moose. Moose brought the intricate string arrangements featured in the group’s Amazon Music Songline performance to the stage, following a similar guest appearance at Chicago’s Wrigley Field in June.
Residency Details and Fan Experiences in New York
The Madison Square Garden stand continues with additional performances scheduled for tonight and tomorrow. To celebrate the run, the band established a dedicated pop-up store and photo gallery located just three blocks from the arena at 362 8th Ave.
The retail space features an interactive scavenger hunt for fans, hiding 10 “golden tickets” inside purchased items. Prizes associated with the golden tickets include lifetime admission to a Mumford & Sons headline show, exclusive meet-and-greet access, autographed guitars, vinyl records, and curated New York merchandise packages.
Sudeikis’ appearance in New York follows another major live milestone earlier this summer, when the actor made a surprise cameo during the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final halftime show. During that event, his Ted Lasso character offered words of encouragement to co-headliner Justin Bieber prior to his performance.
Meanwhile, Ted Lasso returned for its fourth season earlier this month. Sudeikis initially designed the sports comedy-drama to conclude with its third season in 2023, but ultimately reversed course, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he experienced second thoughts once production wrapped.
