Argentina President Javier Milei announced punitive measures against businesses operating in the Falkland Islands during a live television broadcast on Thursday night, denouncing the territory as “Argentine territory under British occupation.” Speaking during a national address, Milei declared that his administration will sign decrees to introduce sanctions against any companies working on oil production in the area.
Milei Imposes Oil Sanctions Over Falklands and Plans Naval Base
The announcement follows renewed tensions over the British overseas territory, which were amplified after US President Donald Trump suggested in an interview with GB News that the United States would not necessarily come to the aid of the United Kingdom in a future conflict over the islands. Reflecting on the 1982 war, Trump told the network that the UK had “comported yourselves very well” in taking the islands back, but noted that the location is a long distance away and pointed to past grievances regarding NATO support.
During his address, Milei maintained that the islands are historically and legally part of Argentina. “I want to be quite clear with everybody. The Falklands are Argentinean. Historically and legally,” Milei said. “There can be no argument. They are part of the Argentine territory.” He added that islanders on what he termed “usurped territory” do not possess a legitimate right to self-determination, dismissing any arguments supporting it as invalid.
A central focus of the new economic measures is the Sea Lion oilfield, an offshore project owned by an Israeli and a British firm where production is slated to begin in 2028. Milei labeled the project a “clear and present danger” to national sovereignty claims. “If we do not act swiftly in a few months, they will have the material capacity to access the oil that lies underneath our sea. Something that has never happened before,” he stated.
Alongside the sanctions on oil development, Milei announced plans to construct a naval base in Tierra del Fuego in the south of Argentina. He asserted that the United States is assessing its historical position regarding the Falklands, describing Argentina as a reliable partner and valuable ally.
The diplomatic push aligns with ongoing debates over sovereignty and security in the South Atlantic. In a 2013 referendum, residents of the Falkland Islands voted overwhelmingly to remain a British overseas territory, with 99.8 percent casting ballots in favor and only three votes against. While the United States maintains a formally neutral diplomatic stance, Washington provided support during Britain’s campaign to retake the islands following the 1982 Argentine invasion.
Downing Street reiterated its position earlier in the week, stating that the UK’s stance on the islands is long-standing and unwavering. A spokesperson emphasized that sovereignty rests with the UK and that the islanders’ right to self-determination remains paramount.
