Jay Shetty, lifelong red, award-winning life coach and former monk, has revealed his best XI for Manchester United.
The bestselling author spoke to us during his visit to Old Trafford earlier this year when he was asked to share his squad selection.
Shetty opted for an old-school, 4-4-2 formation to form his ideal team, a task which proved very tricky given the number of great players who frequented the Theater of Dreams. Discover here the players selected by the famous life coach…
In goal, the choice fell on David De Gea, although Shetty admitted it was the toughest decision to make as he was torn between Peter Schmeichel and the Spaniard.
In defence, Shetty opted for Gary Neville at right-back, while fan favorite Patrice Evra was chosen at left-back.
Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been chosen as centre-backs. This duo is considered one of the best centre-back pairings in United history.
Shetty described Ferdinand as a reliable and confident figure in defence, while deciding to opt for Vidic due to his role in United’s strongest team he has known.
Honorable mention also went to Gary Pallister at the heart of defence, a player Shetty said he would have chosen had he asked his father
The podcast host has chosen two United legends in midfield, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane.
Shetty explained how much he enjoyed watching Keane play for the Reds and that there was nothing better for a supporter than the Irishman’s energy and passion on the pitch.
Class of ’92 graduates David Beckham and Ryan Giggs have been chosen to complete the midfield in the wide areas. Shetty praised Beckham for his ability to cross from the right flank and for his masterful free-kicks.
In attack, the choice was vast, with players like Eric Cantona, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.
But it was Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo that Shetty chose to complete his XI.
Shetty pointed to the quality of the bond between Rooney and Ronaldo during their spell at Old Trafford as the main factor in deciding which team would lead the forward line.
