At Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, the hydrogen-powered JCB Hydromax racer achieved a world record by averaging 406.320 mph (653.909 kph) across two runs, driven by retired Royal Air Force fighter pilot Wing Commander Andy Green. Officiated by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the vehicle demonstrated zero-tailpipe-emissions combustion performance using internal combustion engines adapted from commercial machinery.

Engineering a 1,600 BHP Hydrogen Powertrain

The record-breaking run relies on a heavy-duty architecture far removed from typical passenger car design. Two production-based engines, manufactured at JCB’s facility in Foston, Derbyshire, deliver a combined 1,600 bhp to the drivetrain.
