Jean-Marc Nollet’s Interview on LN24 and LN Radio: Cooperative Federalism and Environmental Policy in Belgium

This Monday, January 15, Jean-Marc Nollet was invited on the set of LN24 and LN Radio to discuss hot issues.

The co-president of the Belgian environmental party starts the interview by advocating cooperative federalism. “Belgium is too often blocked and unable to decide. We have come together and are proposing solutions to make Belgium more efficient and less complex. The goal is to strengthen the capacity of federal power.”

Jean-Marc Nollet then explains, particularly in terms of environmental policy, that the N-VA is Belgium’s problem. “If Flanders were an autonomous country, it would receive a red card from Europe (Editor’s note: because it does not respect the objectives of the Paris agreements). It is therefore essential, and this is what we are proposing, that as a last resort it is the federal government that decides on decision-making. It is because of the position of the N-VA in the Flemish government, which uses a lot of vetoes, that Belgium no longer exists on the international scene.”

Then the ecologist returned to the position of the president of DéFi concerning the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. “We must strengthen the Federation around what is at the heart of its skills: education and culture. These two powers must remain with the French Community but for all that, we propose to reduce the number of deputies.”

To conclude, Jean-Marc Nollet opposes Bart De Wever’s vision in favor of a Current Affairs cabinet in place of a long formation of a government. “I’m obviously against that. Behind this vision we are witnessing horseplay and an inability to make big decisions. In 2019, we faced the formation of a PS and N-VA government. We are the opposite of their values. The MR is a dream, the PS is available but Ecolo will always be the bulwark against the N-VA.”
