Lexi Thompson In Contention As Thitikul Leads KPMG women’s PGA Championship
Frisco, Texas – In a compelling turn at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Lexi Thompson, who has taken a step back from full-time play, is fiercely competing for her first major title in more than ten years. Simultaneously occurring, Jeeno Thitikul has surged ahead, extending her lead after friday’s round.
thitikul, currently ranked No. 2 globally, navigated a challenging six-hour round, concluding just before sunset with consecutive birdies, resulting in a 2-under 70. This performance places her at 6-under 138 overall. She holds a three-stroke advantage over Rio Takeda (71) and Minjee Lee (72), and a four-stroke lead over Thompson, who carded a 70 in the sweltering conditions at Fields Ranch East in PGA Frisco.
Thitikul’s Outlook On Her Performance
“To be honest, I didn’t think it was going to be that good of a result out there,” stated Thitikul, a 22-year-old aiming for her first major victory. “Especially today,I said to my coach,’If anybody can shoot under par today, that player will be really, really great.’ I’m shooting 2 under par, and I was like, ‘Wow!'”
The harsh Texas weather, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and constant wind, proved challenging.Only seven of the initial 156 players managed to stay under par through the tournament’s first two rounds. Notably, no player has achieved a bogey-free round this week.
Korda’s Performance And Thompson’s Strategy
Thitikul and top-ranked Nelly Korda, who managed birdies on the final three holes and ended with a 74, were paired together for the first two rounds.Korda is currently 2 over for the week.
