Jeep warns owners of thousands of Cherokees to keep them away. Because ?

And he did it again. Chrysler parent Stellantis is recalling 219,000 Jeep Cherokees worldwide over fire hazards and has warned owners to park outside until repairs are made.

The recall covers Jeep Cherokee model years 2014 through 2016 equipped with a power liftgate. An electrical short in the power liftgate module can cause a vehicle fire with the ignition on or off.

It is the third recall since 2015 to address the security flaw. Vehicles repaired under previous recalls will still need the new repair done, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The automaker said that “owners are encouraged to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.” Stellantis is still working on the correction of the recall and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on June 30.

The recall covers about 132,000 vehicles in the United States, 23,000 in Canada, 3,000 in Mexico and 60,500 outside of North America. NHTSA said owners should follow Stellantis’ advice and park outside until the recall unfolds and owners get repairs.

The company said the vehicles are failing due to an electrical short. They were built with a power liftgate module located in a location vulnerable to water intrusion.

Last year, Stellantis opened an investigation into an increasing trend in cargo compartment fires in Jeep Cherokees from 2014 to 2015.

The company has identified 50 customer support records, 23 warranty claims, and 21 field reports potentially related to this issue.

Both Stellantis and General Motors are building vehicles with myriad problems, many of them being recalled and others being left quietly with their problems.

California has a strict lemon law, and owners of certain substandard vehicles have the right to protest. The other states are silent, not forgetting that car manufacturers are well paid to their lobbyists to prevent legislators from creating laws like California’s Lemon Law.
