Today show co-host Jenna Bush Hager disclosed during Wednesday’s broadcast that a network correspondent bluntly told her within months of starting her television career that she was hired because of her father, former U.S. President George W. Bush. Speaking alongside co-host Sheinelle Jones on the Wednesday episode of “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle,” the 44-year-old television personality opened up about the early pressures she faced as a high-profile public figure entering morning broadcasting.
Early Criticism and the Reality of Privilege
Hager recalled that an unnamed correspondent approached her within the first month or two of her tenure at NBC, telling her directly, “We just thought they hired you because of your dad.” While Hager declined to name the colleague responsible for the remark, she acknowledged during the segment that the critique touched on a fundamental insecurity shared by individuals with prominent parents.
The conversation unfolded during a broader on-air discussion concerning “nepo babies.” Rather than deflecting the label, Hager readily admitted that her famous lineage opened doors that might otherwise have remained closed. “I’m sure — and I haven’t asked my boss, and I’d rather not — I got this interview. I was on the show because my dad was president. I wrote a book,” Hager explained.
According to Hager, her initial introduction to the program occurred during her father’s second term when she appeared as a guest to promote her 2007 nonfiction book, Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope, detailing her experiences as a UNICEF intern in Latin America. Nine months later, she returned alongside her mother, Laura Bush, to promote a children’s picture book titled Read All About It!. Following those appearances, network producers repeatedly reached out to her.
Transition from Teaching to Broadcasting
Despite the network’s early interest, Hager did not immediately jump into television. She initially turned down offers to join the morning program because she was working as a schoolteacher. She recalled that she kept teaching for several years before ultimately deciding to take the interview, noting that teaching proved to be “the hardest job there is.”
Hager officially joined NBC in 2009 as a correspondent, shortly after her father left the Oval Office. Over the next decade, she built out a broadcasting footprint, eventually taking over co-hosting duties alongside Hoda Kotb on “Today with Jenna & Hoda” in 2019. Following Kotb’s departure from the program, Jones stepped in as her permanent co-host.
Reflecting on her career trajectory, Jones praised Hager for openly acknowledging her background. “That is why we love you, because you own it. But then you still keep going. You don’t sit on it,” Jones noted during the broadcast. Hager responded by emphasizing the intense work ethic required to sustain a career under public scrutiny, noting that she has often felt driven to overcompensate. “We all work like crazy,” Hager said, adding that she feels “lucky to be here” despite the pressure to prove herself.
