Jerusalem: The Church Committee said that Israel’s attack on Jerusalem is a violation of international laws.

The Presidential Committee also said that the Israeli police have been threatening to close down the Holy City for several days. The police also asked the churches to reduce the number of people entering and participating in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The Israeli police turned the city into a military barracks. And barricades were placed around the Church of the Holy Sepulcher at all entrances,” said Ramzi Khouri, head of the committee.

Khoury added that Israel does not comply with international laws and religious practices that guarantee freedom of worship. He said, “The Israeli government is not interested in creating a peaceful environment and instead is interested in provoking the sentiments of Muslims and Christians.” Khoury also urged human rights organizations to take immediate action against those who desecrate Israel’s holy sites and to end Israel’s crimes against the people of Palestine.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holy Land commented the other day that the far-right government led by Benjamin Netanyahu is making life miserable for Christians in Jerusalem. He added that the Christian community is increasingly under attack and this approach emboldens the terrorists.

Attacks have escalated since Israeli police clashed with Palestinians inside Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Three people, including Italian tourists, were killed in the attack. Two British-Israeli sisters, aged 16 and 20, were killed and one seriously injured in a shooting in the West Bank. In addition, one person was killed and seven others, aged between 17 and 74, were injured when a car plowed into pedestrians walking along a cycling path along the seafront in central Tel Aviv.

The holy city of Jerusalem is the heart of the Christian faith. But the number of Christians living here has now dropped to 2%. A century ago, the Christian community made up a quarter of the population. Many people migrated to other places as the conflicts in the area became permanent.
