JESSICA Pegula defeated world number one Iga Swiatek to advance to her first Grand Slam semi-final at the United States (US) Open.

Pegula, who had previously lost in six Grand Slam quarter-finals, advanced to the US Open semifinals after recording a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Swiatek.

In the US Open semi-finals, the American will face Karolina Muchova who defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1, 6-4.

“I’ve been to many quarterfinals before but always lost,” said Pegula.

“Finally, I can say I will play in the semifinals of a Grand Slam. Thanks to the fans who supported me throughout the match.”

“To win against the world number one is crazy. But I was optimistic that I could do it before the match,” he continued.

Pegula’s progress to the US Open semi-finals follows the success of compatriot Emma Navarro who will appear in the other semi-final against Aryna Sabalenka.

The US men’s tennis team has also secured its place in the US Open final after Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe faced each other in the semi-finals. (bbc/Z-1)
