Damion Howell was arrested upon landing at JFK airport from Jamaica and accused of the death of a gang member in Queens (NYC) inside a warehouse last summer.

Howell, 39, was arrested at the airport Thursday and charged with homicide and possession of weapons. In January, New York police identified him as a suspect in the Aug. 5, 2022 shooting of Julian Askew, 29, a member of the Gorilla Stone Nation gang, outside a bodega on Waltham St. near Tuskegee Airmen Way.

After spending several months on the run, police learned on Thursday that he was heading to New York on a flight from Jamaica. When he landed, he was arrested.

Howell and an unidentified accomplice confronted the victim inside the warehouse. As they walked outside, the accomplice walked away and Howell pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and fired one shot into Askew’s chest, according to police.

Howell then got into a gray sedan driven by his accomplice and the two fled. The other man is still being searched for.

Everybody around here is carrying guns… Obviously this is a social problem that nobody wants to address. It was another senseless death.”

Ramadan Askew, uncle of the victim

The victim was rushed to Jamaica Medical Center and later released. He was at home recovering when he took a turn for the worse on November 14 and was rushed to Queens Hospital, where he died.

A guy from Askew told Daily News at that time that he had been partially paralyzed by the shot and that blood clots in her legs caused an aneurysm.

“Everyone around here carries guns.” lamented the uncle, Ramadan Askew, 60. “Obviously this is a social problem that nobody wants to address. It was another senseless death.”

The motive for the shooting is still unclear. Askew had been arrested five times, including two for robbery and one for possession of weapons. Records show that he was paroled in March 2021 after serving nearly three years in jail for assault. Prior to that, he had been on probation in February 2015 after serving more than a year for attempted robbery.

Howell had been arrested in a murder case in 1999. He also has arrests that have been sealed.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
