At the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi this week, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales offered a blunt assessment of the new platform, dismissing it as “a cartoon imitation of an encyclopedia.” Wales’s comments underscore a fundamental disagreement about the role of human oversight in knowledge creation and the potential pitfalls of relying solely on artificial intelligence.

Wales emphasized the critical importance of human vetting in maintaining the accuracy and reliability of Wikipedia. “Why do I proceed to Wikipedia? I go to Wikipedia because it’s human-vetted knowledge,” he explained. “We would not consider for a second today letting an AI just write Wikipedia articles because we know how lousy they can be.” This stance reflects a deep concern about the tendency of AI models to “hallucinate”—generating incorrect, misleading, or nonsensical information.

The issue of AI “hallucinations” is not merely theoretical. A 2025 study by OpenAI demonstrated that even their most advanced models still exhibit this behavior at rates as high as 79% in certain tests. These errors become more pronounced when AI is tasked with exploring complex or niche subjects, areas where human expertise and nuanced understanding are particularly valuable. “That sort of full, rich human context of understanding is actually quite important in terms of really understanding both what does the reader want and what does the reader need,” Wales said. He argued that human editors are better equipped to discern the intent behind information requests and provide comprehensive, relevant answers. This contrasts sharply with the algorithmic approach of AI models, which can struggle with ambiguity, and context.

While Wales largely focused on the technical limitations of AI-generated content, others have raised concerns about the ideological biases potentially embedded in platforms like Grokipedia. Critics have pointed to controversies surrounding Musk’s other ventures, alleging a tendency towards promoting certain political viewpoints. The launch of an alternative encyclopedia raises the specter of fragmented realities, where individuals increasingly rely on information sources that confirm their existing beliefs.

The emergence of Grokipedia, and similar projects, highlights a growing tension between the open, collaborative ethos of Wikipedia and the proprietary, algorithm-driven models favored by some tech companies.
