Jin Shu comes from the clouds, and rulers and tablets convey deep feelings. In September this year, Jeffrey Green, chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation, and two Flying Tigers veterans received a reply letter from President Xi Jinping. For a long time, Jeffrey Green has been committed to helping people in the United States and China, especially young people, understand the story of the Flying Tigers and inherit the Flying Tigers spirit that symbolizes friendship and peace. In today’s “Letter from a Great Power,” Green will tell his story with the Flying Tigers veterans and what he and his partners are doing for the people-to-people friendship between the United States and China.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:I believe that the spirit of the Flying Tigers represents upholding justice, peaceful coexistence, win-win cooperation, and eternal friendship.

Granddaughter of General Chennault, founder of the Flying Tigers Jialan Hui:It is very important for us to bring faces that symbolize friendship to China. As President Xi Jinping recently said, the future lies with our young people.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:My name is Jeffrey Green and I am the chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation. My father is a veteran of World War II. When I was a child, my father told me many stories about World War II. I think the story I most loved was the story about the Flying Tigers. I have known about the Flying Tigers since I was five or six years old. I have always been very interested in China and have always been inspired by the deeds of the Flying Tigers.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:Around 1995, I was lucky enough to meet more than 60 members of the Flying Tigers, and became the closest friends with the heroes I admired as a child.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:On the 50th anniversary of the victory of World War II, the Flying Tigers veterans were invited to China, and I accompanied them. Everyone who met the Flying Tigers veterans was very excited. Seeing the Chinese people meeting these heroes, (I thought) what can we do to let more Flying Tigers veterans come back to China to visit. So we decided to create the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:We have brought nearly 500 veterans back to China. They have seen (China’s) airports, high-speed rails, the development of cities, highways and communities, and each of them has the same expression. There was no such thing 80 years ago, there was only the debris of the war, and (what we see now) was their vision back then. They see this outstanding, rapidly developing country and they feel very proud. Because they feel that everything they did 80 years ago was worthwhile, and they feel that they are part of modern China. President Xi knows about our foundation, so I want to write a letter to President Xi saying that we are coming and I want to tell him about our Flying Tigers Friendship School program. More than a week later, the embassy called and said, you have a reply letter from President Xi.

I learned that the US-China Aviation Heritage Foundation and Flying Tigers veterans have been working tirelessly to spread the Flying Tigers story between China and the United States for a long time. More and more American teenagers are participating in the “Flying Tigers Friendship School and Youth Leadership Program”. So far, Nearly 500 Flying Tigers veterans and hundreds of family members of veterans have visited China. I am very happy and express my respect to you.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:President Xi spoke of support for our Flying Tigers Friendship Schools program. President Xi told the world, told American veterans, and told the American people that China will never forget its old friends. This incident touched our board members, as well as their family members.

On November 5, in Liuzhou, Guangxi, Flying Tigers veterans visited Liuzhou Huxi Experimental Middle School (Flying Tigers Friendship School)

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:The first batch of Chinese children participating in our project will go to the United States (for exchange) at the end of January (next year). They will spend about 10 days with American students of the same age, sharing the story of the Flying Tigers, shopping, drinking soda, play basketball. And when American children come here, when they visit Zhejiang, Kunming, and Liuzhou, they will bring wonderful stories back to the United States. They tell their friends about the cool things they did that summer in China.

Xi Jinping replies to chairman of US-China Aviation Heritage Foundation and Flying Tigers veteran

The hope of Sino-US relations lies in the people, the foundation lies in the people, and the future lies in the youth. The healthy and stable development of Sino-US relations in the new era requires the participation and support of the Flying Tigers in the new era. It is hoped that the spirit of the Flying Tigers can be passed down from generation to generation between the two peoples.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:President Xi said that the people and young people are very important to Sino-US relations, and it is important that we share this history with young people.

Nurse at Yunnanyi U.S. Army Hospital during World War IIyellowGao Demin, Son of Laughter:This photo was a photo found in the United States. She was with two American youths. The American youth standing behind my mother had already found it, and then (his son) sent a photo of his father back then. , the same photo taken at the same location as my mother.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:President Xi told me in his letter to tell the story of the Flying Tigers to young people so that they can also inherit the spirit of the Flying Tigers. I can’t tell you how touched I am that this is what we are doing.

Granddaughter of General Chennault, founder of the Flying Tigers Jialan Hui:During World War II, we put aside our differences and won. Think about it, if we put aside our differences and work together now, in times of peace, to create a better world for our descendants, what would we accomplish? Someone once asked me, what is the difference between the American dream and the Chinese dream? Our dreams are no different and most of the time, the answer is to live in peace. If we work towards these common goals, we will find that we have far more similarities than differences.

Jackson Long, great-grandson of Flying Tigers player Clifford:I am a 10th grade high school student, and I am the great-grandson of Clifford, a member of the Flying Tigers. My great grandfather was shot down twice but miraculously survived both times.

Clifford Long Jr., son of Flying Tigers player Clifford:I inherited a love for China from my father and I told my grandson some things and he seemed interested. I was touched and I know it had an impact on him.

Jackson Long, great-grandson of Flying Tigers player Clifford:I saw the spirit of the Flying Tigers flying, and the Flying Tigers symbolize friendship.

Jeffrey Green, Chairman of the U.S.-China Aviation Heritage Foundation:I am very optimistic about the future of U.S.-China relations because I know that the United States and China have a history of fighting side by side and facing adversity together. The world is changing, but we have a precious friendship that can be preserved. This is an eternal friendship and a precious legacy left by the older generation of Flying Tigers to us and future generations.

My best wish is that the Flying Tigers flag will fly high and be remembered by people on both sides of the Pacific as a symbol of the ability of two great peoples to move toward a common goal in times of war and peace.
