JK Scott’s Record-Breaking 83-Yard Punt for Los Angeles Chargers

2023-12-11 04:32:00

JK Scott had the longest punt in franchise history for the Los Angeles Chargers and the longest in the NFL for a player from an Alabama high school or college on Sunday.

With the Chargers facing fourth-and-20 at their 17-yard line in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos, the former Alabama All-American came in to punt for the third time in the game. The football ended up in the end zone for a touchback.

Scott’s 83-yard punt tied for the 17th-longest in NFL history. The only punt to equal Scott’s Sunday effort in the past decade is an 83-yarder by the Dallas Cowboys’ Bryan Anger last season.

Scott broke by 1 yard the franchise record for longest punt. Paul Maguire had an 82-yard punt for the San Diego Chargers in 1961.

Among players with Alabama football roots, Scott’s 83-yard punt surpassed an 80-yard punt by Alabama alumnus Chris Mohr for the Buffalo Bills in 1996.

Scott contacted the football at about the Los Angeles 6-yard line, and it landed at the Denver 20 before bouncing into the end zone.

Scott averaged 57.4 yards on five punts, with a 48.4-yard net, on Sunday in Los Angeles’ 24-7 loss to the Broncos.

Last week in the Chargers’ 6-0 victory over the New England Patriots, Scott’s performance earned the AFC Special-Teams Player of the Week Award for Week 13 of the NFL’s 2023 season.
