“Above all, and because of my way of being, I always respected hierarchies, I was trained that way,” Matos noted. “I had a very great respect for the person as a coach and then as a person, Nuno Dias. And the basis of respect always existed. I like Nuno, I think he is an extraordinary coach.”
When pressed on whether he would have accepted another taxing campaign under Dias’s high-intensity tactical system, Matos left no doubt: “If Sporting wanted another year, would I be willing to sacrifice myself for another year? Without a doubt, without a doubt.”
