Joburg Car Crash History & Repair Nightmare | IOL

A 29-year-aged man in Gauteng, South Africa, is facing significant financial and emotional distress after purchasing a used vehicle with a hidden crash history, according to a report published Wednesday by IOL News.

Wesley Joubert’s ordeal began with the purchase of what he believed was a reliable used car. Though, he soon discovered a pattern of recurring mechanical failures requiring constant and costly repairs. Joubert alleges the vehicle had been involved in a previous accident that was not disclosed to him at the time of sale.

The IOL report details Joubert’s mounting frustration and the financial strain caused by the ongoing repairs. He describes feeling “financially and emotionally drained” after months of attempting to maintain a vehicle plagued by issues stemming from the undisclosed damage. The specifics of the vehicle’s prior accident, and the seller’s knowledge of it, are currently under investigation, according to the report.

The case highlights potential vulnerabilities in the used car market and the importance of comprehensive vehicle history checks. Even as the IOL report focuses on Joubert’s individual experience, it comes amid a broader context of road safety concerns in South Africa. In December, award-winning artist Makhadzi was hospitalized following a car crash en route to Johannesburg, as reported by IOL. A tragic scholar transport accident in Vanderbijlpark occurred in January, resulting in multiple fatalities, according to a TikTok video shared by IOL News.

A separate IOL report from January 20, 2026, detailed a crash on Fred Drosta Road, prompting a response from the Gauteng Department of Education. These incidents underscore the frequency of car accidents in the region and the potential for serious consequences.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no official statement has been released regarding Joubert’s case, and the outcome of his dispute with the seller remains unresolved.
