  • US President Joe Biden will run for a second term.

  • He would be 86 years old at the end of a second term.

  • Biden has already invited top Democratic donors and fundraisers to meet with him later this week in Washington.

US President Joe Biden announced his candidacy for a second four-year term in a video posted online Tuesday morning. He urged voters to “let him finish this job” and raised the possibility of another duel with former President Donald J. Trump.

In the three-minute, four-second video, Biden says he spent his early years in office fighting for democracy and freedom. And he warns that “MAGA extremists” across the country are using Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again» would threaten these freedoms.

Biden is asking voters to give him more time to get things done. At the same time, he wants to address concerns that he is too old to hold the presidency for four more years. Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term.

Election campaign will look very different

The 2024 election campaign will look very different for Joe Biden than during his last candidacy. As incumbent president, he will have to balance his job of leading the country with his efforts to win over voters. He is likely to point to his achievements over the past two years, including key infrastructure and climate legislation, designed to prove he is up to the task.

Biden will be doing very differently this time around for another reason too: Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the President has been campaigning for much of his 2020 election practically from his home in Delaware. This time he will again be at major events and campaign stops across the country to shake hands with voters.
