John Cena talks about his participation in WrestleMania 39 this year.
The Cenation frontman faced Austin Theory on Mania’s first night for the United States Championship. While appearing on Busted Open Radio, the 16-time former world champion reflected on the match, adding that he could still have a few performances like this up his sleeve for the future.
Well, I’m excited by the potential. I’m really excited about the potential and that’s because I think in my origin story I wasn’t exactly someone people were betting on. I kind of got hired defensively so I wouldn’t go to WCW for peanuts. I had people who watched me play and stood up for people who didn’t care about my performance which gave me opportunities and I was lucky to have people who supported. I remember the first time I lived, I would say, the “WWE life”, it was in Japan with you (Bully Ray) by my side and that was my – from my point of view, that was your way of saying, hey, welcome that’s kind of who we are and that’s where secrets are shared and that’s where wisdom is imparted and even though it might not not your thing it’s our thing and if you want to be in our family we would love to have you but that’s kinda how our family does it and I never got to thank you for that, so thank you so much for dragging me through the streets of tokyo to get the start of what would be a wonderful ride on a lighting bolt and you know you don’t do it on your own that’s why i think nobody – you don’t pass it to anybody. You just hope to put some energy there and anyone with potential can get it. It was said that I passed the torch to Roman (Reigns) years ago and he is absolutely the face of the franchise. In my mind, he’s the greatest of all time. But, I try to do what I can and when I did, it wasn’t a miracle, it didn’t happen. He got it on his own terms. I just like to see people who are passionate about the business, who want to be there, who want to show off, who don’t use it as a vehicle to do other things because the thing itself is awesome and it’s not Doesn’t matter if you have other outside opportunities.
It’s a testament to your hard work, but man, I wish I was still here everyday. My body can’t take it anymore. I don’t want to give the consumer a bad product. That’s another thing I learned from those veterans back then. Guys like Eddie (Guerrero) would risk so much and he’d be like, ‘I’m never going to give the consumer a bad product. I don’t care how I feel, I don’t care how I feel physically, I don’t care what my mental baggage is, when I’m on it, they paid a lot of money and I’m gonna go out and give it my all have and sometimes I find it when it’s not there ‘and I’m at a point where all I have compared to the bar that has been fixed, boy, what I have is what you have seen at WrestleMania 39. That’s what I’m sure I can deliver and it’s really good here and there. It’s not everyday in WWE, it’s not everyday in sports entertainment. Sports entertainment has raised the bar and I’m humble enough to say it’s great because you’re supposed to leave it better than you found it. People are supposed to keep it going and that’s why you’re supposed to go from the smoky bingo halls at the Pontiac Silverdome to now cities offering us financial incentives to participate in WrestleMania.
Although he may have lost, Cena had a special moment at Mania. Her entry included 20 children of which Make-A-Wish was to be part of her entry. He talked about it later in the interview.
As long as I participate in WWE, the idea of making Wish Kid WrestleMania entrance, WrestleMania entrances are coveted. They are special, they are unique. I have a few that are unique to me, but when the production came to me with the idea of, ‘Would you mind sharing the stage? We have this idea. ‘Of course.’ You give 20 kids the perspective of the ramp, looking at a stadium filled with over 80 thousand lunatics. It’s not being in the seats. I was a fan of The Undertaker game. I have seen both sides. It’s great to be sitting there, but it’s mythical to have this WrestleMania entry able to do that for a group of people, like take as many as you can, I don’t care how thin my stage slice is . Let’s give that perspective to people who appreciate it and yes, they could probably use a little joy in their lives.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cena explained why he thinks Roman Reigns is the greatest wrestler of all time.
