The Green Bay Packers chose a different strategy than the Steelers regarding their starting quarterback during Thursday’s preseason matchup. Rather than resting him entirely, head coach Matt LaFleur sent Jordan Love onto the field right after the opening kickoff. Love finished his brief night completing 3 of 5 passes for 18 yards before exiting the game in favor of Tyrod Taylor.
The opening possession ultimately culminated in a field goal, though not without a momentary procedural hitch. A 58-yard attempt by Trey Smack drew an unnecessary roughness penalty on Steelers defensive lineman Dean Lowry. Although the rookie kicker successfully drilled the long attempt, the Packers elected to take the yardage penalty, resulting in a slightly shorter repeat try after an incompletion on third down.

For Pittsburgh head coach Mike McCarthy, the preseason opener brought a heavy dose of nostalgia. McCarthy took charge of his first game with the Steelers against the franchise that gave him his first NFL head coaching opportunity. McCarthy spent 13 seasons steering the Packers from 2006 to 2018, capturing the organization’s fourth Super Bowl title along the way.
That championship success remains deeply etched into Green Bay’s geography. In 2014, city officials honored the milestone by naming a roadway after him. Mike McCarthy Way runs directly alongside Ray Nitschke Field near the team’s training facility, placing him in an elite club alongside every Packers coach who has secured a Lombardi Trophy.
Despite the deep-rooted personal ties, McCarthy made it clear that sentimentality took a backseat to current roster woes. When speaking with reporters ahead of the contest, the veteran coach downplayed the emotional reunion.
“Our history there is obviously long and the success we had there, You get to spots like this, the personal relationships or the people you think about, … the professional connection to Green Bay, that’s part of my life. But I’m more worried about our pre-snap penalties right now, to be honest with you.”

Bernard has experienced a quieter start to camp as he works to master the intricate demands of a professional playbook.
Addressing the common obstacles facing incoming pass catchers, Rodgers offered a clear assessment of the transition from college to the professional ranks.
Rodgers elaborated that processing speed outweighs raw athletic traits in his offense, pointing to former teammate James Jones as a prime example of a player who excelled through supreme mastery of the playbook rather than sheer speed.
Trenches and Depth Positions Under Evaluation
Beyond the skill positions, the coaching staff utilized the preseason contest to settle lingering questions along the offensive line. Spencer Anderson and Dylan Cook entered the stretch competing for permanent starting duties on the right side.
Anderson, who logged 11 career starts largely within jumbo packages as an extra tackle, looked to prove he could anchor the right guard spot full-time against competition from veteran Brock Hoffman.
