The 67-year-old lawyer from Antioquia Jorge Iván Palacio was the man who made the decision to provisionally suspend Luis Rubiales from any activity related to soccer at the national or international level after the situation that arose with the kiss of the player Jenni Hermoso.
“The president of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, Jorge Iván Palacio (Colombia), using the powers granted to him by article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (CDC), decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all national and international soccer-related activities. This suspension, which will become effective as of today, is for an initial period of 90 days, pending the disciplinary process opened against Mr. Luis Rubiales on Thursday, August 24,” FIFA reported.
Palacio graduated from the Universidad Autónoma Latinoamericana de Medellín, later becoming a Master of Laws from the Sergio Arboleda University.
His professional career started as a municipal civil judge and later he worked in the Superior Court of Medellín.
In 1987 he came to the Supreme Court of Justice, where he was a magistrate for a little over 11 years. In 2013 he presided over the Constitutional Court.
He alternated all these positions with his vocation for teaching, being a professor at the Universidad de los Andes and a principal member of the Hidroituango board of directors.
He came to FIFA to join the Ethics Committee and was part of the investigation subcommittee, in addition, he helped build the Code of Ethics for which managers such as Nicolás Leoz and Julio Grondona were later investigated. However, he was prevented from intervening in the case, since he had reached the position suggested by Conmebol.
In 2017 he came to the Disciplinary Commission and today he chairs it. Reason why he had the last word to provisionally suspend Luis Rubiales, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, for a period of 90 days, for the Jenni Hermoso case.
