Jorge Lorenzo: “He’s the big surprise” / MotoGP

Former motorcycle racer Jorge Lorenzo looks at the current Championship situation at the front of the field and explains which of the current MotoGP stars has amazed him the most.

Although GP veteran Jorge Lorenzo retired from the MotoGP field after the 2019 season, he continues to follow events in the highest class of the motorcycle world championship closely. And the Spaniard doesn’t shy away from giving his opinion on the stars of the World Cup circus.

He recently did this in a “Cycleworld.com” interview, in which when asked about his personal highlight in the first races of the season, he explained: “Aleix Espargaró on the Aprilia is the big surprise. No one expected him to be able to win a few races and now he’s second in the championship.”

“At the age of 33, he is a real sensation,” the 35-year-old from Palma praises his compatriot. But there are also nice words for the World Cup leader Fabio Quartararo. He says about the French: “He is currently the strongest driver when it comes to speed and mental strength.”

“Even though the Yamaha is currently not the best motorcycle in the field,” emphasizes Lorenzo. “He would be even more unbeatable on a Ducati,” the 68-time GP winner is certain. And he adds: “He is a strong driver all round and is already close to this year’s World Cup crown.”

Lorenzo said of Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia, third in the World Championships: “He’s very fast, as you can see from the many poles he’s already won. But he also made a lot of mistakes and his deficit is already large, but the world championship fight is still open.”
